Osteopathic Manual Therapy Techniques

Osteopathic Manual Therapy Techniques Osteopathy originated as a 19th century alternative medical approach emphasizing the physical manipulation of the neuromusculoskeletal system. Osteopathic practitioners devote their efforts throughout the musculoskeletal system, including soft tissues and joints outside the spine. There are several specific osteopathic techniques in wide use. Some of these techniques used at Oceanside Physical Therapy include:

Muscle Energy Technique (MET)
MET can be employed to reposition a dysfunctional joint and treat the affected musculature. Indications include, but are not limited to: muscular shortening, low back pain, pelvic imbalance, edema, limited range of motion, somatic dysfunction, respiratory dysfunction, cervicogenic headaches, and many others.

Strain and Counterstrain
Within manual therapy, Strain-Counterstrain is a type of “passive positional release” created in the early 1960s by Lawrence Jones, D.O. It is a hands-on treatment that alleviates muscle and connective tissue tightness by the use of very specific treatment positions held for 90 seconds. During the procedure, the involved tissue is “slackened” causing a relaxation of the “spasm” which, in turn, allows local areas of inflammation, trapped within the painful tissue to dissipate. This gentle and painless technique is a very effective treatment for a wide variety of orthopedic conditions such as headaches, fibromyalgia, sciatica, tendinitis, chronic neck pain, and post-surgical conditions.

Cranio-sacral Therapy
CranioSacral Therapy (CST) is a gentle, hands-on approach that releases tensions deep in the body to relieve pain and dysfunction and improve whole-body health and performance. It was pioneered and developed by Osteopathic Physician John E. Upledger after years of clinical testing and research at Michigan State University where he served as professor of biomechanics.

The length of your torso, the positioning of your back, neck and knees, the way you bend when you ride, all need to be considered to maximize performance. Let Oceanside Physical Therapy help you ride more comfortably and efficiently by performing a customized bike fitting.

Certified Blood Flow Restriction Therapy

bloodflowrestriction Blood Flow Restriction Therapy is the application of a specialized tourniquet system to a proximal arm or leg, which is inflated, to a personalized and specific pressure to reduce blood flow to an exercising extremity. The application is brief and intermittent, typically about 6 minutes per exercise but can last up to 30 minutes based on the specific protocol. Typically, to increase strength and hypertrophy a person would need to lift a significant amount of weight (60% of a 1 Repetition maximum or greater). With PBFR you can create significant strength and hypertrophy gains with loads as low as 20% 1RM. For more information, visit Owens Recovery Science

Halo Science

halo Neuropriming is the process of using electrical stimulation during movement-based training to build stronger, more optimized connections between your brain and muscles. This process induces a temporary state of hyper-learning or “hyperplasticity” in the brain, which refines the brain’s ability to learn and adapt to training. This allows you to see better results, faster. For more information, visit Halo Neuroscience
